Ouija planchette, hand and roses design

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A coloured drawing of a tattoo design on pale paper, set against a black background. A pale hand with a lace cuff reaches towards a wooden planchette marked with an eye and the words Ouija and Mystifying Oracle, while a purple rose and a red rose with leaves frame the composition. Bold black outlines and soft watercolour-style shading give the piece a neo-traditional look, with a teal backdrop behind the central elements.

Mrs Ada Rook had kept the planchette in a tea caddy for eleven years, wrapped in a handkerchief that smelled of camphor and her late husband's pipe. On the first wet Thursday of November she unwrapped it on the dining table, set the board beside the lamp and waited for the house to go quiet, which in Pennick Street took some time.

Her niece Dilys arrived with a scuttle of coal and a face like a shut purse. "You'll push it yourself," she said, sitting down. "You always lean." Ada didn't answer. She rested two fingers on the wooden teardrop, the painted eye staring up at the ceiling from its red ring, and felt the cold lace of her cuff brush the back of her hand.

The planchette slid to B, then to A, then swept across the board so quickly that the lamp flickered: T, H, E, K, E, T, T, L, E. Dilys snorted. "Frederick never could spell kettle." Ada pressed harder, and the pointer drifted to YES, then stopped dead.

Dilys took her fingers away. The planchette kept moving without them, unhurried, and spelled out a single line in the candlelight: YOU LEAN TOO. Ada looked at her own hand, still resting on the wood, and for the first time in eleven years she did not argue.
