Two roses in outline on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two roses with curled petals and leaves are drawn in bold black outline across the arm. The linework is clean and even, with little or no shading, so the flowers appear as open outlines on the skin. The design is in black ink only, and the roses fill the frame diagonally, with one larger rose at the upper right and a smaller one at the lower left.

Keep the line unbroken, your uncle says, and the rest will forgive you. He sits on the back step of the Thistledown with a tin of enamel and a jam jar of brushes, watching you work the outline of a rose across the cabin door. The cut is flat and brown beyond the towpath, and a heron stands in the shallows as if it has been paid to wait.

You have done three roses this week already, on the doors of boats that are not yours, and each time he has made you scrub the first attempt off with turpentine. Too fat, he says. Roses are not balloons. A petal wants to curl back on itself like a page someone has been reading in the rain. So you draw the big bloom at the top right, then the smaller one tucked under it, with leaves cut at the edges like the teeth of a saw.
By the time the lock-keeper's wife walks down with two mugs of tea, the outline is finished and the paint is still a week away. She stops at the bottom of the gangplank and tilts her head. Without colour, she says, they look like they are holding their breath. Your uncle grunts and takes his mug. You think about that for the rest of the afternoon, how the flowers stand open on the wood with nothing inside them yet, waiting for someone to decide what red they should be.
