Rose with leaves on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large open rose fills the centre of the image, with its petals outlined in fine lines and shaded with dense stippled dots. Leaves wrap around the flower in finely hatched black linework, with dotted shading fading into the skin around the edges. The arm sits against a textured white wall, and a second tattoo of angular geometric lines is cut off at the top right.

Tobias Greave pricked the last of his dots into the copper while the snow piled against the parlour window, and I stopped pretending I was not watching him over the bread dough. He had come up from the valley the morning before the blizzard with a leather case of needles, a jar of oil and a rose he had cut from the vicarage wall. He would not draw a line, he told me, because a line was a lie told by a hand in a hurry. Dots were honest. Each one cost him a breath. The leaves he hatched in tight black strokes, ruled with a brass square the way he ruled everything, including the napkins at supper.

On the fourth night the wind dropped and the stove went quiet, and he showed me the plate. The rose sat in the middle of it, open as if the sun had only just reached its heart, and the dots around its edge thinned into bare copper like frost melting off a sill. 'It is finished,' he said. 'Print it, and it will be the only thing in this valley that does not change.' Then he went up to bed without his candle, and I heard the boards creak above me until morning.

He was gone by the first clear light, his boot prints already filling with new snow, and he had left the plate face-down on the bar with a coin on top of it. I inked it once, wiped it, and pressed it to a sheet of paper that smelled of the cellar. The rose came up pale and perfect. In the corner, in dots so faint I had missed them, someone had written a name, and I could not read it until I held the sheet to the window and the snow light found it.
