Outline roses on a hip and thigh

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two large roses with open petals and curling leaves are drawn in single black outlines on the side of a hip, extending towards the upper thigh. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, so the flowers appear as simple contours on the skin. The photograph is black and white and shows a person lying on rumpled bedding wearing a black bikini bottom, with the tattoo as the main focus of the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sunday the mule would not cross the dry wash below Tarrant Gap, so Ada Pell got down, took the lead rope in both hands, and talked to him the way her mother had talked to hens. The sack on his back held forty rose cuttings wrapped in wet newspaper, and the sun was already leaning hard on them.

A man in a green truck slowed beside her. He said the road to the railhead was shut by the flood, and that roses would be worth nothing by Thursday. Ada said roses were worth whatever the person holding them believed. He laughed, drove on, and she heard his brakes once more before the heat took the sound.

She sat on a boulder and drew with a stick in the pale grit. She drew a rose with its petals opened wide, one line going round and round, then a second rose beside it, and a leaf that curled like a question. She did not lift the stick once. Sunday ate the last of the newspaper and watched her.

When the truck came back at dusk, the man found her asleep against the mule with the sack empty and the road beside her covered in roses drawn in single lines. The wind had been over that ground all afternoon and had not rubbed out a single one. He drove around them slowly, the way you would step around someone sleeping.
