Mandala and paisley design on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of an ornate paisley-shaped motif stacked above a circular mandala with a central eye-like shape, ending in a short dotted line. The design is built from fine dots and delicate linework, with dense radial detail in the circles and scalloped edges. The photograph is black and white and shows a bare leg from a low angle, with the tattoo sitting on the outer thigh.

Nobody in Hartsmere would sell you indigo that wasn't pressed the old way, and my mother's cloth-shop sat on the bend of the Lune with its shutters painted the colour of a bruise. The pattern pinned to her ledger was a teardrop with a fern curl inside it, and beneath that a round seal with an eye at its heart. She said the eye was there to watch the vats so the dye would not turn sour while nobody was looking.

One wet spring a stranger came off the barge with a bolt of pale linen folded under his arm and asked for the pattern to be stamped on it. He had no coin, only a brass key and a story about a sister who had gone north to marry a glassblower. My mother held the key a long time. Then she took the block, dipped it in the madder, and pressed the teardrop down, counting each dot aloud the way you count stitches in a lullaby. When she lifted the block, the eye had come out cloudy, as if it had been crying into the cloth.
He left before the linen dried. We never saw him again, but for years afterwards that pattern kept coming back to us in the water. Whenever a vat went wrong, the dye would bloom into a shape like a half-closed eyelid, and my mother would sit on the back step with the dotted line of the block across her knees and say, quite patiently, that the eye had only been looking for the sister.
