Roses across chest and shoulders

Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph cropped at the neck, showing two large rose tattoos, one on each side of the upper chest near the shoulders. The roses have bold black outlines with grey shading on the petals and surrounding leaves, and the composition is centred on the chest with a white lace camisole and black lace bra visible below.

Dear Tamsin,

The seed bank inventory came up again this morning, and I have decided to stop pretending the roses are just a line item. Forty-one cuttings survived the Halley relay, all of them rooted in grey nutrient gel under the blue lamps of Bay Four. You asked why I keep the old ink drawings pinned above the trays. It is because the ink is the only record that shows what a rose was meant to look like before the drought: heavy black outlines, petals folded over one another like a held breath, shadow pooled grey in the hollows where the light could not reach.

Your grandfather would have laughed at me. He drew roses on the backs of ration slips during the long crossing, bold lines that never once matched the real thing, and he swore the real thing was overrated. He preferred the drawings because they did not wilt. I told him that was cheating.

Yesterday the sensors in Bay Four flagged a cluster of bloom in the north row, the first in six years. I went down alone with a torch and found three buds open, pale and slightly crooked, each one bent toward the lamp as if it had been waiting for someone to notice. I sat on an upturned crate and did not move for an hour.

Send me your sample logs when you are back from the lower decks. I want to see whether the grey shading in your sketches still holds. Bring the pencils. We have roses to draw.

Love, Nan
