Outline roses on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline tattoo of several roses and leaves covers the shoulder and upper arm, with the flowers overlapping in a loose cluster. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, so the flowers are shown as open contours on the skin. The photograph is taken in strong directional light against a dark background, with the subject's face out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the lower step of the Hollin Inn by the second night, and Mags Pennock was still scraping the kitchen hearth when the stranger knocked with a stick of charcoal in his hand instead of a coin.

He asked for a room and a candle and nothing else, and paid in drawings. Every morning he sat by the window with his charcoal and drew on the glass in breath, the way the frost grew on it, though he never used a colour. Roses, he said, were only lines that agreed to stand together. He drew them as open cups with petals folded out, and their leaves were just the edge of a leaf, nothing more, so the flowers seemed to stay on the pane after he had wiped the rest away.

On the sixth day the thaw came early and the road opened under the melt. Mags found the stranger's room empty, the bed made square, and on the window a cluster of roses drawn in the frost so fine they seemed to be cut into the glass. Beneath them, in the same thin hand, he had written her name and nothing else.

She kept the window as it was. Every winter after, when the frost came back and the sill grew its own pattern, she sat with a cup of cold tea and waited for the petals to show themselves, which they always did, around the edges, before the room warmed and let them go.
