Fine line roses on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three open roses and a small rosebud drawn in thin black outline, with the blooms clustered in a loose triangle. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, so the flowers rely on their contours and a few inner petal lines for detail. The photograph is black and white and shot close up, with the tattoo centred against plain skin and soft light.

You are counting paper roses on the last night of the Michaelmas fair when the generator coughs and the big wheel stops halfway up with a child shrieking at the top. Mrs Okonedo's stall has three ways to win: the coconut shy, the tin ducks, and the rose cage, where a wire ring lands over a bloom and the bloom is yours. Nobody has won the rose cage since spring. You have stopped minding.

Then Terry Fenn, sixteen and sunburnt from the dodgems, bets you a shilling he can drop a ring over the little bud at the back. You point out that the three open roses at the front are the easy ones, leaning together like women gossiping over a fence, and the bud sits alone on its single thin stem where the wire has to thread a gap no wider than a thumbnail. He says everything moves if you wait long enough. You tell him roses don't move. He pays his shilling anyway.

The ring goes over the bud on the fourth throw, and Terry doesn't reach for the prize. He sits on the edge of the counter and says his nan drew roses exactly like that on the back of every letter she sent him, outlines only, because she said colour was for people with time to waste. He asks whether you'd like the bud for yourself. You say the rules are the rules.

When the generator catches and the wheel lurches down, you are already folding the cage, and you find the little rose has come off the wire and into your coat pocket, where it stays all winter.
