Outline stencil on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Flash

A hand with mint green nail polish holds a finger wrapped in pale transfer paper that carries a thin brown outline stencil of a small, looping design. Behind the hand, out of focus, are a bottle and a tattoo machine or similar equipment on a light surface. The image is a close crop with the stencil in the centre and the hand framing it on the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had found its way under the shop door again, so I pinned the transfer sheets along the back of the cupboard and worked by the kettle lamp. Ruddock wanted THE CONSTANCE repainted across her transom before the Tuesday tide, and I had cut every letter cleanly except the loop at the tail of the C, which kept tearing whenever my knife lingered.

"Leave the loop," said Ruddock from the doorway, dripping, his cap pulled low over the grey. "She's always had that bit. My wife drew it on the hatch board the day we bought her, the morning the first herring came in." He didn't say what had become of his wife, and I didn't ask. The loop was a bowline's eye, a rope turn you could tie in the dark, and he had been tying it since before I was born.

So I cut it thin, pressed the pale paper down and rubbed it flat with a bone folder until the outline came through, brown and patient, the way the tide shows a wreck's ribs at the bottom of a spring ebb. I held my breath over it as if it might lift and fly off the paper.

On Tuesday the Constance went out past the breakwater with the loop shining wet on her stern. Ruddock stood at the rail with one hand on the halyard and didn't look back at the shop. I stayed until the lamp guttered, stacking the spoiled sheets, and found a fleck of brown ink on my own fingertip where the loop had been. I left it there. It was still there when the boats came in.
