Overlapping circles and lines on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo of several overlapping circles of different sizes, with a small circle at the centre and a small dot marking its middle. Thin straight lines and arcs cross through the design, with a scatter of dots at the lower left. The linework is delicate and even, shown in black ink on pale skin against a dark sleeve and a blurred background.

Harrow had been sent to measure a circle, which the ministry insisted was a border. Two villages, a river and a long-standing grudge sat inside the chalk marks he and Mr Okafor laid out over three weeks of August. Okafor did the sums in pencil on the backs of ration cards. Harrow carried the brass dividers, the one instrument his father had left him, and each morning he set the point into the same small hole in the turf and swung the arm wide.

The first circle was easy. The second took a day of argument with a clerk from the far office, who wanted the line to run through the church rather than around it. Harrow said a circle could not be argued with. Okafor said everything could be argued with, it simply cost more.
On the ninth morning the dividers slipped. The point skidded and scored a fresh arc through the turf, and where it crossed the old one a small crumb of soil lifted and stayed. Okafor crouched to look at it. "Leave that," he said. "That's where the centre actually is. The rest of us only agreed on it."
They filed the plan with the centre marked by a dot and the rings running through each other like ripples from two stones. The ministry sent back a note asking why the boundary had been drawn with straight lines cutting through the middle of everything. Harrow never answered it. He kept a copy in his coat, and sometimes at the river he traced the overlapping rings with his thumb, finding the dot every time.
