Symbol wheel and occult marks on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black line tattoo on the inner forearm shows a large circle containing an eight-spoked compass-like wheel with a central circle, and angular marks set around its rim. Smaller symbols sit around it: two overlapping circles at top left, a circle with a cross at top right, a cross-like mark at bottom left and a crescent moon at bottom right. The linework is uniform and thin, in black ink only, with the design spaced evenly across the arm.

Rain had been coming off the canal since dawn, and the tarpaulins over the Tallow Lane stalls had sagged into bellies full of water. Dessa Morrow had sold nothing since eleven except a cracked hip flask and a tin of loose buttons. So when the man in the oilskin lifted the brass disc from her trestle and held it under his thumb, she let him keep it without asking for anything in return.

"Where did this come from?" he said. "House clearance, Hebden Bridge, the summer my dad's brother died. It came in a crate of ship's lamps." He tilted it toward the grey light. Eight spokes ran from a small boss at the centre to the rim, and the letters around the ring had been worn smooth by a thumb that wasn't his. "Whoever made this measured the water, not the sky. Seven of these marks are locks. The last one is where a boat goes down and doesn't come up."
Dessa had heard those stories from the old boatmen who drank at the Anchor, and she had never believed them. Still, she found herself counting the marks the way he did, slowly, her finger hovering over the crescent-shaped notch someone had cut into the rim with a fine chisel. The man set the disc back on the table and walked off between the dripping stalls without buying anything.
That night she carried the wheel down to the towpath and laid it flat on the wet stone. The lamp at the lock gate was the only light for half a mile. She turned the wheel until the notch sat beneath it. The water in the cut went perfectly still, and somewhere under the surface a bell began to ring, very faintly, like something asking to be let through.
