Overlapping circles and geometric lines on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line geometric tattoo of overlapping circles of varying sizes, with small dots, a triangle at the top and thin straight lines and arrow-like markers radiating across the design. The linework is crisp and uniform in black ink, with light dotted and dashed strokes adding texture. The design sits on the inner upper arm and is photographed straight on against a dark background.

Mam says the tide will turn at Corran weir before the kettle boils, and for once she is right. I am sitting on the cabin step with my father's brass dividers in one hand and his logbook open on my knee, trying to make the page agree with the water.

The page is covered in circles. Dozens of them, drawn in his cramped hand with a compass that always slipped, each one a ring of the moon around the bend. He called them his clockwork. Where two rings crossed he made a dot, and where the dots lined up under the little triangle he'd inked at the top of the sheet, he wrote a single word: lift. Lift, he'd say, as if the river were a carthorse that could be talked round.

Last winter the Mary Ellen grounded on a Tuesday because the page said lift on the Thursday. Dad blamed the ink, then blamed himself, then didn't speak for a month. I thought the circles were a mess he'd never finished. Tonight I ran my own thin line from the triangle through the last two dots, and it points straight at the sluice gate, and the water stands exactly where he said it would.

I close the book and leave the dividers on the step. Below the hull the river is already lifting, slow and certain, the way he always said it would.
