Owl and dreamcatcher on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large owl with detailed round eyes and shaded plumage sits above a dreamcatcher with a fine web pattern and three feathers hanging from its base. The linework is crisp and the shading is soft and grey-toned, with no colour ink. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame on a forearm, with a grey fabric skirt and a paved path visible behind.

The owl came back to the wash-house roof the night after the boat failed to come in, and I took it for a sign because I had nothing else to take it for. My father always said barn owls were the island's bookkeepers, counting what the sea had left on the shingle. This one had a grey face like a cupped hand and eyes too round for its head, and it watched me peg out the washing as if I were late with something.

Mrs Ruddock from the far cottage had given me a dreamcatcher the spring Tom went across for the ferry parts. Willow hoop, a web of sinew she had knotted by lamplight, three feathers from a gull she had shot for the pot. She said to hang it where the wind comes through, and the bad dreams would catch in the knots and stay there until morning. I hung it on the nail beside the owl's perch, and the owl did not object.
On the third night I sat on the step with the lamp unlit and counted the owl's breaths the way Dad used to count waves. Four to a minute, steady as a clock. Out past the rocks a light blinked, then held, and I understood it was the ferry and not Tom, but it was coming in. The feathers on the hoop lifted and settled. I stood, fetched the lamp, and carried it down to the slip.
Tom stepped off with a bag on his shoulder and a face like he had been awake for a week. He looked at the wash-house before he looked at me. 'You kept it hung,' he said. The owl had gone quiet on its nail, and the web caught the lamplight in a dozen small pale circles, every knot still tied.
