Realistic rose in a triangle on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a forearm with a solid black downward-pointing triangle, inside which a pink rose with green foliage is tattooed. The rose is shaded with soft gradients and fine detail in the petals and leaves, giving it a realistic finish. The pink and green tones dominate against the dark triangle, and the rest of the frame shows a white top, long hair and a dark background.

The rose-seller came into the valley the week the river froze, pushing a barrow with a single wheel that squealed on every stone. Nobody remembered inviting her. She set up beside the mill with a tin of seeds and a cloth laid out for nothing in particular, and when the miller's boy asked what she sold, she said roses, though there were none for sale and none growing in the valley either.

The miller's daughter went to look because the boy would not stop talking about it. She found the seller kneeling in the frost, drawing a triangle in the dirt with the point of a knife, its base across the top and its tip pointing down at the ground. Inside it she pressed a seed no bigger than a fingernail. Within the hour a red bloom had pushed up through the crust, heavy and dark, and the leaves around it were the green of wet bark. The girl bent close. The petals had a shine like the inside of a shell, and when the sun slid behind the mill the rose kept its colour a little longer than was natural.
The seller would not say what the price was, only that it would be paid when the triangle was closed. The girl went home and thought about it through supper, and in the morning she found her own wrist cold and ringed with a faint dark line, the way the frost draws a border on a window. She understood then that the triangle had been waiting for someone to take it up, and that the rose would open wherever she carried it. She walked down to the mill with her sleeve pushed high, and she asked the seller to show her how the petals went.
