Owl and dreamcatcher on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large owl with wide, round eyes sits above a dreamcatcher with a woven web and three feathers hanging from its base. The owl's wings and chest are shaded with dense hatching and fine detail, while the web is drawn with clean, thin lines. The photograph is taken at a slight angle, with the forearm filling the left of the frame and a grey top at the right.

The third night the owl came down onto the fish market roof, Tomas Greave had stopped pretending he was sleeping. He lay in the bunk of the Brightwater with his boots still on, listening to the other men breathe and the hull knock against the fenders. Somewhere past the breakwater a diesel coughed, then went quiet, and nobody on the quay said anything about it.

His mother had hung a dreamcatcher over the bunk when he was small, a hoop of willow wrapped in thread, with three grey feathers tied to the bottom so they stirred whenever the door opened. She said it caught the bad dreams and let the good ones through. He had laughed at her then. Now he watched the web above his head shiver in the draught and wondered which of the men out on the water was dreaming of home.
At first light the owl was still there, wide eyed on the chimney stack, turning its head to follow the boats as they came in one by one. Tomas counted them off on his fingers. The Brightwater was last, low in the water and smelling of diesel, and the owl did not move until he had stepped onto the stones.
He unhooked the feathers from the wheelhouse and carried them up the slipway to the widow Sallow's cottage, where the lamp was already lit. Nobody had asked him to. He knocked three times and held them out, and she took them without a word, the way you take back something that was never yours to keep.
