Traditional colour tattoo of an owl and a hawk with roses and leaves across the stomach, with a cat wearing glasses and roses on the forearm.

Owl and eagle with roses on torso

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large colour tattoo of an owl and a hawk with spread wings covers the stomach, surrounded by red roses, green leaves and buds. A second tattoo of a cat in round glasses with roses sits on the forearm at the left edge of the frame. Bold dark outlines and soft shading give the design a classic American style, and the wearer is shown from the midriff down in grey lace underwear.

Nobody had ever seen the two of them agree on anything, least of all the rent.

The cat arrived in autumn, carrying a pair of brass spectacles he had fished out of a drowned man's coat by the canal. He set them on the windowsill, wiped them on his tail, and announced that he would be keeping the accounts. The owl blinked. The hawk laughed so hard she dropped a vole. By the end of the week, though, the cat had noticed that the rose bushes outside were breathing sweetness into the damp air, that the roof had three leaks, and that the owl and the hawk had been splitting the same rotten beam for years without either admitting it.

On the first hard frost, the cat chalked the figures on a slate and pushed it along the sill toward them. The sum came up short by one pair of wings. "Then you'll have to be two of each other," he said, and the owl, to everyone's astonishment, spread his wings and let out a cry like a gale through a keyhole. The hawk matched him feather for feather. Along the outside wall, roses nobody had planted opened all at once, and the cat, pleased with the arithmetic, finally balanced his books.
