Wings and geometric lattice on the ribs
Geometric · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A torso is shown from the side, wearing a black bra and dark underwear, with a navel piercing visible. Below the bust, a black and grey tattoo combines a pair of outstretched feathered wings with a geometric lattice of overlapping shapes at its centre. The shading is soft, with fine linework on the wings and a grey, tonal fill on the geometric panel.

The kestrel has been nesting on the thirteenth floor since March, and you have decided it is none of your business. Mrs Okafor on fourteen says it will end up in the car park. Your foreman says the council will want it shifted before the scaffold goes up on Thursday. You say nothing to either of them, because you have watched the bird come and go through the steel poles, always settling on the same crossbar as if it had measured the gaps itself.

On Wednesday evening you hear a thin, rusty cry from the gap between the mesh panels and the concrete. You climb the frame with your torch in your teeth, the wind pushing at your jacket, and find a chick no bigger than your fist, tangled in a loop of old netting. Its feathers are half grown, one wing bent back at a wrong angle. Above you the adult stalls in the air, wings spread wide and tilted, and drops past so close you feel the rush of it on your cheek. It does not come in. It circles and waits, and you understand it is waiting for you to leave.
You carry the chick down thirteen flights because the lift has been out since the new year, cupping it against your chest so the cold air cannot reach it. At the bottom you cut the netting free with the penknife your father left you, and you set the bird on a sheet of cardboard in the lee of the bin store, where the scaffold throws a grid of shadows across the paving. The parent lands on the railing above with a clatter of talons. Then it folds itself down the lattice, one pole at a time, until it reaches the cardboard and the small crooked wing.
