Owl and maple leaves on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large owl's face is shown in realistic detail, with a bright orange-brown eye and feathered markings, set against bare branches and black ink splashes. Maple leaves in orange, red and yellow sit across the lower part of the piece. The tattoo wraps around the upper arm in three photographed views, with soft shading and strong contrast between the dark splatter and the warm colours.

The owl had been watching the lane since the first frost, and by the time you reached the stile at Hollin Gate the maples along the wall had gone the colour of struck brass. Your mother said it was only a barn owl that had lost its nerve in the cold. You knew better. Nothing that patient was ever lost.

You went in after the lantern with the sky already spilled ink-black behind the branches. The oak at the split had been dead for years, and its fingers still caught at your coat as you passed, the way the old women said they would catch at anyone who came looking for the dead. The owl's eye found your light before you found its perch: amber, round and unblinking, the colour of the Plough's hearth on a Saturday night.
It flew low, and you followed the feathered shadow down into the hollow where the leaves lay thick and red. Beneath a rotten log, wrapped in oilcloth, sat your grandfather's tally book. Every debt the village had ever owed the wood was written there in pencil: a cord of firewood, a hare, a child's lost shoe. The last entry was in your father's hand, dated the night he failed to come home, and beside it a single maple leaf had been pressed flat.
You stood there until the lantern guttered. Then you turned the page, found a blank line with your own name already at the top, and understood that the wood had been keeping accounts of you too. You wrote nothing. You tucked the leaf into your pocket, and when you looked up the owl had gone, leaving only the soft sound of wings taking the long way round the village.
