Dragon eye on an arm
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A close-up of a realistic dragon eye with a vertical orange slit pupil, a white highlight and a pale teal glint. The surrounding dark scales are rendered with fine shading and texture, and a pale teal line curls across the lower right of the design. The tattoo fills most of the frame, with the surrounding skin and a blurred background visible at the edges.

The dragon had been sleeping under the Clerkenwell arches since the gasworks closed, and nobody in the street admitted to having seen it wake. Mrs Okonedo swore the bins were always found knocked over on the nights the rain stopped. Old Pell, who drove the night bus, said the lamp above the dead chapel burned orange for exactly one minute every hour, as if something beneath it were blinking.

I went down there because my brother owed money to men who owed money to worse men, and the only thing in the city that could be bargained with was the thing nobody could see. I brought a torch, a bottle of whisky and a tin of sardines, which I still think was the most sensible part of the plan. The archway smelled of wet iron and old coal. Somewhere far back, a scrape, like a lid being slid across a stone floor.
Then the eye opened. It was not the size I expected. It was the size of a dinner plate, and the pupil was a vertical cut of molten amber, narrowing as my torch found it. A pale blue glint sat in the upper corner, like a streetlamp reflected in a puddle. The scales around it were black with age and cracked with rust, each one ridged as if someone had combed them by hand. I held out the sardines. The eye considered them, then me, and I understood it had been waiting a long time for somebody foolish enough to come.
It wanted no money. It wanted the hour the lamp burned, every night, for the rest of my life. I said yes before I had read the terms. When I climbed back into the rain, my brother was waiting at the bus stop, and the debt was gone, and the lamp above the chapel was dark.
