Realistic green eye and rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A large, detailed eye sits across the forearm, showing a green iris with a dark pupil, a reflective highlight, fine eyelashes and a shaded lid. Soft grey shading gives the skin and lid volume, while a red rose with dark leaves sits at the top edge of the frame. The photograph is taken close up against a dark background, with a blue gloved hand visible at the upper right.

Brother Osric had painted the eye on the gatehouse wall the spring the well ran dry, and the abbot never asked him why. It was a plain thing at first, a lid and a lash line in lamp black, but he worked on the iris for three weeks, mixing green from crushed copper and the yolk of a blackbird's egg, until the brothers coming in from the fields would stop and swear they felt it turn.

The novices said it watched the kitchen. They said it knew who took the honey before the honey was missed. Old Hilda, who sold eels at the river gate, said it had watched her husband walk to the ford and never come back, and that she had given it a rose at its feet every feast day since, so it would be kind to the next one who passed.
So there was a rose, red and tight, painted beneath it on the stone with dark leaves like stiff fingers. Nobody remembered who had planted the bush that grew up the wall to meet it.
In the thin winter of the year the bell cracked, a boy came up the lane with a sack and a lie ready in his mouth. He stopped under the gate, looked up, and found himself looking into a green that had no business being so wet. He told the brothers afterwards that he confessed everything, the honey, the eels, a purse he had lifted at the fair, and that the eye only blinked once, slowly, as if to say it had heard it all before.
He stayed. He tended the rose. The eye, Hilda said, had never looked so pleased.
