Owl and pink flowers on a shoulder
Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A stylised owl with amber eyes and a grey-lilac face sits on the left of the design, next to large pink flowers with darker red veining and a smaller pink bloom above them. A dark branch runs through the lower half, and a red petal and orange flower extend over the edge of the shoulder. The bold outlines, saturated colour and soft teal wash behind the flowers give the piece a neo-traditional look.

Marguerite Vane had not expected the owl to be awake at noon. It sat on the broken lintel of the east tower, amber eyes narrowed against the sun, while she picked her way through nettles toward the chapel. The steward had sworn the castle stood empty since the fire, and the roof had been gone for forty years, so the bird had the better of the bargain.

She had come for the hibiscus. Her grandmother had planted a hedge of them under the chapel windows, pink as a fishwife's cheeks, and the village said a few still bloomed in the walled garden where the stone had slumped inward. Beyond the arch, a dark branch of old apple lay across the path like a fallen rule. Among its twisted limbs the flowers had come back, wide and veined with red, each one cupping a small star of light at its heart.
The owl followed her from stone to stone. When she knelt to cut a bloom, it dropped from the lintel without a sound and settled on the branch beside her, its feathers the grey-lilac of old mortar. "So you're the lord's last tenant," she said. It blinked slowly, as though the question had been settled in its favour long ago.
She took three flowers, one for each of the hedges the fire had taken, and left the rest for the bird. At the gate she looked back. The owl had gone, but a single red petal lay on the wall where it had sat, bright as a coin, and Marguerite tucked it into her coat pocket before the wind could carry it off.
