Origami cat with flowers on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A folded paper-style cat with orange fill and dark outlines sits at the centre, surrounded by red and white blossoms, green leaves and teal cloud shapes. The linework is bold and solid, with flat colour fills and small red speckles on the cat's body. Orange, teal, red and green dominate against the pale skin, and the design is arranged as a compact oval on the arm.

The paper cat had been folded from the last page of the grandmother's ledger, and Tomas carried it up through the orchard in his shirt pocket because the wind off the hill would take anything loose. The apple trees were heavy that August, their branches propped on forked sticks, and the windfalls had gone soft in the grass where wasps argued over them. Nobody in the village could say whose orchard the cat belonged to, only that it had walked out of the pear rows the summer the clouds came down low and stayed.

Old Mrs Fenn at the gate said a folded cat could not be trusted to keep a promise, only to keep its shape. She told him to set it on the stone wall at dusk and say aloud the name of the thing he had lost. Tomas had lost his sister's red ribbon somewhere in the long grass, and he was ashamed of how much it mattered to him, so he said it quietly, the way you would tell a secret to a dog.
At dusk he set the cat on the wall. The cloud rolled over the top of the hill, cool and teal-grey, and the creases loosened one by one. The cat unfolded a leg, then another, and stepped down into the blossom that had not yet fallen. Its orange sides were still smooth as paper, freckled with red where the juice of the bruised fruit had marked it. It nosed under the leaves for a long while and came back with the ribbon in its mouth, dry as if the grass had never touched it.
Tomas offered it a heel of bread. The cat declined, folded itself back into a square with a neat click, and sat on his palm with the ribbon across its lap. In the morning the wall was bare, the ribbon was tied round the gatepost in a bow no child could have managed, and every windfall in the orchard had been stacked in tidy rows, each one wrapped in a leaf and folded the way the cat had been.
