Blue and pink peonies across shoulder and chest

Japanese · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows several large peony blooms, with a pale blue flower and a pink and red flower on the shoulder, plus a smaller pink bloom and dark green leaves. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading in the petals and gold stamen details at the centres of the flowers. The design wraps over the shoulder onto the upper chest, with the blue bloom sitting closest to the collarbone against a purple top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The old woman came aboard at Stillwater Lock with a bundle of wet sacking under one arm and asked for a berth on the Marigold for the length of one summer. Eli Marsh said the barge was full, which was a lie, and she looked at him the way a heron looks at a stone. She unwrapped the sacking on the roof. Three roots lay inside, muddy and cold, and she set them in the old tin bath with a jug of canal water.

By June the bath was full of blooms. One was pale blue, the colour of cloud on still water, its petals folded over each other like a shawl pulled tight. One was pink going to red at the rim, heavy as a loaf. The third was small and pink and stubborn. Eli sold the pink ones at Sunday market for more coin than he had seen in a year. The old woman said nothing. She only hummed to the blue bloom every night while the lock keepers' lamps went out one by one along the cut.

In August the money ran short, and the blue one was the only thing on the barge worth anything to a stranger. Eli cut it at the stem before dawn and wrapped it in newspaper. By the time he reached the bend at Calder Weir the water had gone flat and grey, and the Marigold would not pull against the current. He heard her voice then, low and level, coming off the river itself. You have taken the one that was keeping the tow line slack, she said. The rope went taut as wire and the barge began to slide backwards toward the lock.

He carried the blue bloom back to the bath at dawn, wet and bruised, and set it in the water. The old woman was gone. The sacking lay folded on the roof, and in the tin bath the blue peony was already opening, its gold centre bright as a coin. Every spring after that, the first flower on the Marigold's roof was pale blue, and no bargeman on the cut has ever sold one.
