The lighthouse keeper's daughter had been counting owls since the storm, because her father said the birds knew before the boats did. She climbed the iron stairs with a candle cupped in her palm and found the wind had dropped to nothing. Below, the fishing lines were sliding off the quay. Someone had painted a grinning skull on the door of the net shed, its cheeks blooming with marigolds, and she had always thought it cheerful until her mother told her the dead came back to see who had kept the lamp lit. On the far reef a small dark shape was rocking, and beside it a second, smaller light flickered, then steadied, then flickered again in the old pattern her father had taught her. She answered it with three long flashes. The owl lifted from the rail without a sound, its wings spread wide as the lamp's glass, and it turned once above the lantern room before dropping away towards the reef. She did not see the boat come in, only the two lights moving together, and by morning the rail was empty except for a single feather, grey and fine, lying where the owl had been.
