Ornate owl with spread wings holding an orb

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black ink drawing of a horned owl with its wings spread wide and its talons gripping a round crystal ball at the base. The feathers and body are built from fine linework, stippling and dense patterned bands, with a small lotus motif and radiating marks above the head. The image is entirely black ink on a white background, with no colour.

Brother Ansel has taken the lamp from my hands again, saying the glass needs cleaning before the candles are lit, so I am writing by what is left of the afternoon, which in this valley is never much after the Feast of Saint Brannoc. You asked whether the new border is finished. It is not. I have drawn the owl three times now, and the abbot still sends it back with his thumb pressed on one wing.

The trouble is the orb. Abbot Cuthred insists the owl must hold the crystal as our scriptorium window does, catching the light and throwing it onto the page, so the gold can be laid in the dark hours. I have pinned the glass to the sheet with my own needle and drawn each talon around it, feather by feather, until my eyes ache from the fine lines. The lotus above the head I finished in a single morning, because it came out of my hand as easily as breath.

Last night I sat with the page until the bell for Vigils. The wings fill the whole margin, every barb counted, and the rings of knotwork beneath its feet turn round and round like water in a cistern. I held the lamp behind the crystal to test it, and for one moment the light did not fall on the vellum at all. It bent up through the glass and settled in the owl's eye, which I had left blank, and it seemed to me the bird was looking straight at the door.

I have not told the abbot. I have filled the eye with a little white paint, so it looks as it should. Write soon, and tell Mother I am eating. Your sister, Edith.
