Owl, compass and banner on a limb
Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A tattooed owl perches on a branch with five-petalled blossoms, facing forward with its head turned slightly to one side. Below it, a scroll banner reads ALL ROADS LEAD HOME, and a compass rose hangs from the branch on a chain. The shading uses fine hatched and stippled lines in black and grey, with a clean, engraved look and the design centred on a limb.

The owl came to the lamp room the week the relief boat stopped coming, and you counted it as company. It sat on the brass rail with its head cocked, watching you trim the wick the way the old keeper used to, as if it were checking your work. Nobody had told you owls could find a rock eleven miles out in fog, but this one did, every night, and every morning it was gone before the gulls woke.

The compass was your father's. He had hung it from the chain above the lens the winter he stopped speaking, and the needle had long since rusted to a fixed opinion. When you took it down to clean the glass, you found the rose face scratched with a line of initials and a date, and beneath them, in a hand you didn't recognise, the words ALL ROADS LEAD HOME. You thought it was a joke. Then you thought it was a dare.
On the ninth night the fog thickened to milk and the owl did not come. You lit the lamp by hand, turned the crank until your shoulders burned, and sent the beam out over water you could not see. At four the bird landed on the gallery, soaked through, with a strip of oilcloth knotted to one leg. Inside was a note in your father's cramped capitals: BOAT IN CHANNEL. LIGHT STEADY. Below it, he had drawn the compass rose.
You tied the note to the chain and let the old brass swing until it settled. Out there, someone was steering by a light they could not yet see, and you were steering by a bird that had never once been lost.
