Ornate owl on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large owl perches on a branch-like base, facing the viewer with wide round eyes and a patterned crown across its head. The feathers and wings are built up from fine stippled and hatched linework, giving soft shading and texture. The design is shown in black and grey and fills the frame against pale skin and a dark background.

The bride's mother would not let the owl into the church, so it sat on the lychgate post through the banns and watched the lane with its round eyes. Nobody in Hollin Fold could say who had sent it. The village blamed the miller's wife, and the miller's wife said it was a bird and had come on its own, which made people look at her twice.

Tomas the thatcher had asked Ellen Marrow to marry him in March, and she had said yes before he finished the question, which he took as a good sign. The wedding was fixed for the first Saturday after the harvest moon. On the morning of it the owl had left the gatepost and was found in the churchyard yew, sitting very upright with its crown of feathers fanned out as if it were waiting for a sermon. Nobody moved it.

Tomas went looking for Ellen at noon. She was sitting on the stile with her shoes in her lap, not crying, only watching the stubble field. "My grandmother kept an owl," she said. "She said a wedding wants someone awake to see it through." He sat beside her, and they watched the hedge until the light turned orange. Then he told her the owl had chosen the gatepost on purpose, and she laughed, and the laughing startled the hedge into movement. Out came the owl, low and silent over the stubble, and it settled on the church roof above the door.

They were married at dusk with the bell going. The owl stayed on the roof until the last hymn, then flew home over the mill. The village agreed afterwards that a marriage with an owl watching it would last, though nobody could agree on what it would last through.
