Owl with eye and rose on a calf

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A large owl is drawn in black outline with a staring face, a circular third eye on its forehead and a second eye inside a triangle on its chest. Feather scales are rendered with small hatched lines, and a rose with leaves sits at the lower edge of the design. The piece is shown in black ink only on pale skin, with the owl filling the frame vertically.

The owl came back to the Harrow barn the week the thaw didn't come. My father said it was only a barn owl, pale as a dinner plate and fond of the hayloft, but my mother had a rule about birds that looked at you straight on, and she would not let me carry the milk pail past the door until it had gone.

That was the winter we lost the heifer in the ditch and the bank's letters started arriving in the same brown envelopes as the feed bills. Nobody said much at supper. Mum kept Gran's rose by the back step wrapped in sacking, and every night she went out with the torch to check the feed-shed door, the triangle Gran had painted there with an eye at its centre. To keep the watchers off, she said, though she never said which watchers she meant.

On the twenty-third I climbed to the loft with the torch in my teeth and found the owl on the rafter above the seed sacks. Its three eyes caught the light, and it did not blink. I told it everything: the letters, the heifer, the way Dad sat with his hands flat on the table as if the wood might lift. When I climbed down my fingers were numb and my face was wet, and I couldn't tell whether I had been crying or only breathing in the frost.

In the morning the sacking was off the rose, and one bloom had opened on the frozen stem, red as a postage stamp. Dad stood in the yard looking at it for a long time. Then he went indoors, took the bank's second letter from the dresser, and read it aloud at the table, slowly, the way you read something you mean to answer.
