Owl head tattoo on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large owl head faces left, with a yellow-amber eye, a dark hooked beak and feathers drawn in loose, sweeping strokes that fade into the skin. The black and grey shading gives the feathers depth, while the amber eye is the only strong colour. The design fills most of the frame against a blurred pale background.

Dear Tom,

The owl came back to the walled garden the week after the frost, and I have decided she is no bad omen whatever Mrs Pryce says at the lych gate. She sits on the top of the old pear trellis at dusk with her head turned all the way round to the left, watching the potting shed as if it owes her rent. Her eye is the colour of the marmalade Mother kept in the blue jar, and when the lamp in the cottage comes on she closes it slowly, like someone giving up an argument.
I have stopped sweeping the feathers off the path. There are grey ones caught in the gooseberry netting and a long dark one tangled in the bean poles, and I have been leaving them where they fall because they look like something a careful hand would have drawn. You always said I could not draw a hen. Well, the owl has no interest in my opinions, and neither did the drawing you left on the dresser, so I am writing to say the rhubarb is up and the cold frame has held.
The parish will want the garden cleared by Lady Day. Mr Hollis from the estate came by with his measuring chain and asked why I had let the nettles go. I told him the nettles were the owl's business, and he laughed the way men do when they think a woman has said something clever by accident.
She went last night. I found a single feather on the step, pale at the tip and grey toward the quill, and I have put it inside the envelope so you can see what I mean. Come home at Easter if you can. I will leave the gate on the latch.
