Owl perched on a branch on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large owl with wide, dark eyes and detailed feather shading sits on a gnarled branch with its talons gripping the wood. The linework is soft and the shading moves from deep blacks to light greys, giving the feathers and bark texture and depth. The design runs vertically along the side of the torso, with the owl's head near the top and the branch sweeping down the lower edge.

Don't switch that lamp on, son, the owl doesn't care for it. Sit where you can see the car park. That's her on the ash tree by the bins, the one the council forgot to fell. Seventeen years I've worked nights at St Aldwyn's and she's never missed one.

The first winter, a porter called Mick Tolland swore she took a sparrow off the bin lid right under his nose. I believed him, mostly because Mick couldn't lie to save his life. Every night he'd bring his trolley up to the fourth floor and report what she'd done. A mouse. A pigeon. Once a whole rat, laid neat at the feet of the night sister like a cat's gift. Nobody could say why she came, only that she came when the ward needed somebody awake with it.

Last March a lad came in off a building site with a bad fall, scared out of his wits, and he kept asking me what the bird wanted. I told him she wanted nothing. She was only keeping watch so the rest of us didn't have to do it alone. He didn't believe me, but his shaking eased when her eyes caught the corridor light through the glass.

Mick's gone now, and the sister too. Still, every time I wheel the linen trolley past that window at three, I look for those two dark eyes on the branch and give a nod, the way you would to a colleague on the late shift. Sometimes she nods back. Either way, the corridor feels less empty.
