Sit down, sit down, you lot at the back, and mind the brass. Every Saturday the Lantern Ballroom in Ashby Wells had a band, and every band had to get past the bird on the door before they could play a note. That year it was Mr Horace Tuft, a barn owl in a stovepipe hat carved from an old stump, who ran the place with a pocket watch and a grudge against silence.

The trouble started in April, when the rain got into the speakers. Mrs Pettifer's gramophone had gone to frogs by then, the big green fellow who lived in the hall drain and sang bass whenever the water rose. The brass band had lost its trumpet to a drunk sailor, and the roses on the piano lid had started to wilt for want of dancing. Horace stood on the stage, tapped his hat, and declared there would be no quiet in Ashby Wells while he still had breath in his feathers.

So he sent the lads out with a barrow and a sack of old loudspeakers, and by Friday the hall was rigged like a ship. Every wall had a horn. The smiling blue lamp over the door grinned at everyone who came in, and the great plank above the stage read what it had always read, though nobody had painted it quite so gold. Make some noise, it said. Horace took that as an order, and the whole town, from the baker to the vicar's terrier, found itself dancing until the plaster shook.

They say the frog still sings in that drain when it rains. And if you listen closely on a quiet night, past the last chime of the clock, you can hear an owl clearing his throat and asking whether the room is ready. It always is.
