Colourful sugar skull design
Colour · Flash
A stylised sugar skull drawn in bold outlines against a white background. The eyes are pink five-petal flowers with yellow centres, the nose is a blue heart, and the teeth are yellow with dark gaps. Blue and pink scrollwork and dotted filigree fill the forehead, cheeks and jaw, with a small blue star near the chin.

Sit closer, the lot of you, before the sugar sets. The pink paint is on the windowsill, Mateo, beside the jar of sea salt. Good. Every skull Ines Carrasco painted on Santa Vela had flowers for eyes, because she said a dead man should be able to see the garden he left behind. The blue heart in the nose was for the fishermen. They went out before dawn, and the heart was the thing they carried back.

The year the boats stayed in harbour for nine weeks, Ines ran out of yellow. The island had one shop, and it had sold out of saffron, so she crushed marigold petals and stirred in a spoon of honey for the flower centres. Her skulls came out duller that season. Old Ramón complained that his dead wife would not recognise herself. Ines told him to look harder.
When the wind finally turned, the first boat in was Ramón's own son, sunburnt and bitter from the cold. He stood in her doorway and saw the skull on the bench with its tired yellow centres, and he laughed until he had to sit down. He said the flowers looked like the lamps along the quay at night, the ones you steer by when there is nothing else to steer by.
So that is the tale. The heart is for coming home, the flowers are for remembering, and the little blue star by the chin is where Ines wrote her own name, small enough that only the sea would think to look. Now pass me the next skull, and mind the glue.
