Owl on a branch in a heart frame

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a large-eyed owl perched on a bare branch at the centre of a heart-shaped outline formed by curving twigs. A crescent moon and soft shaded clouds sit behind the owl in the upper and side areas. The linework is sketchy, with feathers built up in layers of graphite shading, and the image is entirely in grey tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud Pell had kept the walled garden at Hallam House for forty-one years, and the morning after the February gale she found the owl in the roots of the fallen ash. It was no bigger than a teacup, with eyes like wet pennies and one wing folded wrong beneath it. She carried it to the potting shed wrapped in her apron and set it on an upturned seed tray.

Mr Ashdown wanted the ash sawn into logs by Friday. Maud asked him for one more week. In the evenings she bent a length of hawthorn into a heart, twisting the twigs round and binding them with garden twine, the way her mother had shaped willow for May Day. She propped it against the shed wall and set the owl on a crossbar of it. Each night a crescent moon came up over the glasshouse roof, thin as a paring, and the owl turned its head to watch it climb.

By the dark of the moon the wing had knitted. Maud opened the shed door at dusk and the owl stepped onto the sill, considered the lawn, then flew straight up past the cedar into the grey clouds banked over the orchard. Ashdown came down the path with a lantern, asking after the ash and the logs. She told him the owl had gone back to the tree.

The next spring a seedling ash pushed up through the hawthorn heart, where the twigs had taken root in the soil. Maud never did hang the frame on the wall. She left the shed door open each evening, and sometimes, when the moon was a thin curve in the branches, a grey shape came down out of the clouds to sit on the highest twig and wait for her to finish her tea.
