Owl perched on a branch line drawing

Mixed · Flash

A stylised owl with large round eyes and scale-like feather patterns sits on a bare branch with small leaves and an acorn-like bud. The owl is drawn in teal with bold outlines and patterned wing shading, while the branches use thin brown linework with a few simple leaf details. The design is set on a plain white background with the owl centred and the branches extending to either side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owl came to the Harrow farm the winter the lambing failed and the well froze to the bottom of the bucket. Nobody sent for it. It simply sat on the dead ash branch above the byre door, turning its big round face toward whoever came out with the swill.

Old Mags Penrose said an owl on a farm meant a death, and she said it every morning until her knees gave out and she stopped coming outdoors. Her grandson Tom did the chores after that. He threw a handful of barley at the owl the first week, and the owl ate it, and the week after that Tom began talking to it while he forked straw, the way a man talks to a dog that won't go home.

In the hungriest days of February a ewe went down in the far field, and the snow came on so thick Tom could not see his own boots. He went out with a lantern and found her by the sound of the owl calling from the hedge. He followed the call along the wall, stumbling, until the lamplight caught a pale shape on a low branch. The owl lifted off, circled once, and settled again a little further on, and so he went on, from branch to branch, until the ewe was under the oak with her lamb already sucking.

When the thaw came, Tom cut the dead ash down for firewood and left one stub standing for the owl. Mags said that was a foolish thing to do. Tom said nothing. The owl kept to the stub all spring, and every evening it watched the gate, and every morning there was an acorn left on the step.
