Owl with spread wings sketch
Black and grey · Flash
A loose black line drawing of an owl seen head on, with its wings spread wide and upward and its talons tucked below. The linework is sketchy and gestural, with feathers drawn as sweeping strokes and the eyes given sharp, focused detail. The drawing is black ink on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The dough has been rising under its cloth since three, and you are the only soul awake to hear the engine ease off to a grumble. Somebody in the wheelhouse has cut the throttle, which means the nets are going over the side and nobody will want a stew for at least an hour. You wipe your hands on the tea towel and step out onto the aft deck to breathe air that does not smell of onions.

The owl is sitting on the gallows rail as if it paid for the seat. It is a big brown thing, and when you step out it opens its wings in one slow sweep, so wide the spray seems to bend around them. Its eyes lock on you with the look of a landlady counting the rent. You have seen gulls steal chips off a plate, but gulls do not come aboard at four in the morning, forty miles from any land anyone has bothered to name.
Old Mabry, who cooked on this boat before you, used to say owls were the souls of drowned fishermen who had not liked the cod. You told him that was the kind of thing a man says after too much rum. He winked and said you would see. Now the bird drops, talons tucked, straight at the galley hatch, and you flinch, and it veers off into the dark over the winch with its feathers streaming like rope unspooling.
When you go back in, there is a single feather caught in the tea towel. It is dry, absurdly dry, on a boat full of wet. You tuck it into the pocket of your apron and leave the hatch open a crack, just in case it wants its supper back.
