Owl on branch thigh tattoo

Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large owl perches on a bare branch with leaves, set in front of a mandala and sunburst design, all enclosed in a circular frame. The owl and branches are rendered in fine black linework with grey shading on the feathers, while the sunburst and mandala use thin reddish-pink lines. The tattoo fills the upper thigh, with the subject centred and the background shapes framing the bird.

Dear Margaret,

You asked whether the owl is still nesting in the Pryce orchard, and I can tell you it is, though Mr Pryce has taken to calling it the bailiff because it sits on the gatepost every evening and watches the lane as if it were counting the cars. The boys from the garage say it has a feud with the vicar's cat. I have told them owls do not hold grudges. They do not need to. They only need patience, which is more than the rest of Tallow Green has.

Last Tuesday I went up to fetch the ledger from the chapel hall and found the sun had come up behind the Hollis barn, a great orange wheel behind the hedge, and every bare branch along the ridge looked drawn in ink. I stood there so long the milk cart went past twice. I thought of Father taking us out to hear the owls before bed, how he said a sunburst is only a clock that forgot to tick.

Mrs Dunn asked me to draw the chapel's new window for the appeal leaflet, so I have been sketching it at the kitchen table with Mother's compass. I keep drawing the owl into the margin instead. It fits the circle better than the saints do.

Write back soon and tell me whether the city has shaken the smoke out of your curtains. I am enclosing a pressed leaf from the branch he sat on. It is a poor thing, but it is ours.

Love, Ruth
