Owl with keyhole and key on a branch

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large owl perches on a branch, with wide eyes, ornate scrollwork on its head and wings, and a keyhole shape on its chest. A heart-shaped key hangs from the branch below the owl. The work uses bold black outlines, dense feather shading and light grey highlights, with no colour ink. The owl fills the centre of the frame against plain skin, with the key extending toward the bottom edge.

Sit closer, the fire's gone low and the night watchmen are making their rounds beneath the bridge. You want to know why the owl of Harrowgate Lane never sleeps? Then listen. Her name was Mrs Ada Quill, and she kept the lock shop on the corner where the gas lamp hisses. Every key in the city passed through her hands, and every key she cut came with a little bargain: she would open any door for a neighbour who asked honestly, but she would never open one by force.

One November a boy came in with a heart-shaped key on a ribbon, rusted and bent, asking for a lock nobody had seen since the old asylum closed. Ada turned it over under her lamp for a long while. Then she set it down and said, "That door belongs to somebody who is still waiting for an answer, not to you." The boy went red and stormed out into the sleet, and the key stayed on her counter.

That night the owl came to her window, the way owls do when a bargain has been broken somewhere in the dark. She saw the keyhole pressed into the feathers of its breast, and she understood it had come to carry the key back to its rightful place. Ada took the heart from the counter, tied it to the owl's talon, and watched it lift over the rooftops toward the ruined asylum. In the morning the boy was found sitting on the front step, asleep, his hand open where the key had been. Mind your own locks, lad, and the owl will mind the rest.
