Owl with glowing orange eyes on a hand
Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a frontal owl face covering the back of the hand, with detailed feather texture and shaded grey and brown plumage. Its eyes are bright orange with yellow highlights, and the design continues up the wrist and forearm as swirling red and orange flames. The black background sets off the saturated colours, and the shading gives the owl a three-dimensional look.

The last three tents of Hollis and Daughters still stand on the rec ground at Cressford, and you are the only one left who will climb the ladder to light the torches. The ringmaster stopped paying for diesel in March. The clowns have taken care home jobs in Leeds. What remains is you, a bottle of paraffin, a tin cup with a wick through its lid, and the owl on the rigging, who has never once been fed by the crowd.

She came with Mrs Ashdown's act in 1979, a tawny in a wicker crate that the old woman swore could read the flames. You never believed her. But at dusk, when the sodium lamps buzz on over the car park, the owl turns her head and her eyes catch the torchlight and burn exactly the orange of the fire you are about to make.
Tonight there are eleven people on the benches: a girl in a coat two sizes too big, her father counting coins into his palm, a pair of teenagers who came for the cheap cider in the van. You tip the paraffin, hold your breath, and the flame runs up the guy rope like a ribbon pulled through a sleeve. The girl stands up. The owl drops from the top pole, wings flaring, and settles on the rope beside the climbing fire, unbothered, eyes blazing.
Afterwards the ringmaster says there is no point in another season. You nod, pocket the matches, and let the owl hop down onto your sleeve. The tent will come down by autumn whatever you do. But for eleven minutes tonight the whole dim canvas glowed like a lantern, and the girl in the big coat will tell her school that the fire-lighter's owl looked straight at her.
