You'll not believe what came up through the boiler room grate on Saturday. I was mopping the sprung floor after the last waltz, the one with the Calloway girls who never tip, when the iron lid lifted on its own and three dogs came up one after another, black as coal sacks, with orange eyes like the gas jets on Mill Street. Nobody else saw them. Mrs Okafor from the cloakroom swore she'd only had the one sherry.

They didn't bite anyone. They just walked the length of the hall, sniffing at the cracked mirror and the brass rail, and every time one passed the bandstand the flames along their shoulders flared bright enough to show the painted diamonds on the walls. Then they sat, one above the other as if someone had stacked them on a shelf, and the middle one growled so low the chandeliers rang.

Here's the thing. Beyond the glass of the fire door, the new fellow from the council was pinning up his notice about the demolition. Deadline Friday. The middle hound turned its head towards him and showed every tooth it had, and he went white and walked off down Cotton Street without his hat.

So I've decided the hall stays open. Bring the boys on Saturday. Tell them the dogs are on the door now, and they're better company than the last lot.
