Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing of a horned owl with wings spread wide, gripping an hourglass with its talons. The glass in the bell tower has been running since before Brother Anselm died, and it is your job now to turn it at the hour of matins. Your hands are cold on the brass frame. Above the louvres the owl is already awake, its eyes two pale coins in the dark, and it watches you the way the old abbot used to watch a novice who had miscounted the psalms.

Nobody told you about the owl. You found it the first winter, a grey-brown bird perched on the beam beside the bell rope, unafraid of you. Brother Osric said it had roosted there longer than the monastery had owned a bell. He said it was a keeper too, that the sand and the bird kept different hours but agreed on the one that mattered. You thought him foolish until the night the rope frayed and you had to climb with a lantern clamped in your teeth. The owl dropped to the sill and waited, talons locked around the rim of the glass as if it could hold the sand in place by will alone.

Now you understand the arrangement. The owl guards the night, the glass counts it, and you ring the bell so the valley knows the brothers are still awake to pray. Each hour you lift the glass, turn it, and watch the grains fall through the narrow waist like a slow silver rain. It is never quite the same hour twice.

At dawn you write in the ledger: matins rung, glass turned, owl present. Beneath it, in your own uneven hand, you copy the words Osric scratched into the plaster above the stair, the ones that have outlasted three abbots: time goes by, life goes on. The owl lifts off into the grey, and the glass keeps running without you.
