Owl in flight with mandala crown
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A sketched owl with outstretched wings sits on a curling branch, with a fan-shaped mandala motif behind its head. The linework is loose and pencil-like, with soft smudged shading on the feathers and a pale, unshaded chest. The image is entirely black and grey on a warm beige background, with the bird filling most of the frame.

The winter Saltcote took in the lodger with the drawing case, an owl came in off the cliff through the scullery window, and it would not go back out. It sat on the newel post at the foot of the stairs as if it were paying rent.

Mr Lowry painted the sea for a living and never sold a picture of it, and he said the bird had the right of it. He drew her every evening in pencil, wings opened the way she'd flown in, the fan of the old fanlight throwing its lattice on the wall behind her head. He smudged the shadows with his thumb because he said ink was for people who were sure of things.
Come March the owl went quiet and the lodger went quieter. On his last night he left a sheet of paper on the hall table, weighted down with a pebble from the tide line. It was the bird, of course, but he had drawn a branch curling round her feet where there was no branch at all, only the iron rail he'd climbed every night. Underneath, in careful hand, it said: Keep the window open. She knows the way. The next morning the scullery window stood open, the newel post was bare, and I have kept it open every winter since.
