Eagle tattoo across a man's back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph shows a shirtless man seen from behind, with one hand resting on the back of his head. A large eagle with spread wings covers much of his upper back, rendered with detailed shading and fine feather texture. A dark, detailed sleeve tattoo runs along his raised left arm, and the tiled background is softly lit.

Mabel Gurney kept the walled garden at Hollin Farm the way her mother had, with the pear tree trained against the south wall and the beehives lined up under the yew. The year her husband died the pear stopped fruiting, and the bees went quiet, and the village said that a garden without a man to dig it would go back to the wild. Mabel did not argue. She only pulled the nettles and waited.

In the third week of October an eagle came down out of the grey sky and landed on the wall beside the pear. It was far bigger than any bird that had a right to be in Cumbria, and when it lifted its wings to balance, they spread wider than the gate. Mabel stood with her fork in the leaf mould and did not run. The eagle folded its wings and looked at her the way the old rector used to look at a hymn he disliked, then bent its head and began to work at the mortar with its beak, prising out a stone no bigger than a loaf.
Under the stone was a clay jar sealed with wax, and inside it a handful of pear seeds and a folded paper in her husband's square hand. It said only: Plant them where the sun is kind and the wind is not. She had never known he had hidden anything. When she looked up the eagle had gone, and the wall stood whole again.
She planted the seeds along the path. Nothing came of them that winter. But the following June the pear blossomed white along its whole length, the bees came back loud as church bells, and when the village boys climbed the wall to steal fruit they found the branches heavy and a single feather lying in the grass beneath, as long as a man's arm.
