Ornamental bird design across shoulder and back

Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a person seen from behind with their head turned away, showing a large tattoo across the shoulder and upper back. The design has bold black outlines and flowing, swirling linework suggesting wings and feathers, with areas of fine detail. The soft, dark background keeps the focus on the skin and the ink.

The heron came down to the salt marsh every evening at the turn of the tide, and every evening Ysolde waded out to meet it with a bucket of eels she could not spare. Her brother had gone to the walled town at the spring fair and not come back, and the reeve said the road was closed, the river was up, the whole country was muddy and mad. The heron did not care about any of that. It stood on one leg in the shallows and watched her with a yellow eye.

On the ninth evening the bird did not take the eels. Instead it spread its wings, and the wings were not wings at all but long bands of black ink that ran down its back and unrolled into the water like weed, curling over and back on themselves until they were feathers, then scrolls, then the shape of a door. Ysolde understood that she was meant to walk through it. She set the bucket down on a stone.

On the other side the marsh was dry and the sky was the colour of pewter. Her brother sat under a thorn tree carving a spoon, exactly as he had when he was nine. He looked up without surprise. "You took your time," he said, and he handed her the spoon, which was warm as a living thing and had a heron's head on the handle, with one eye picked out in red.
