Heart and infinity tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long curly brown hair, seen from behind, wears a purple bikini top with a tied strap at the back. A black heart-and-infinity design sits centrally on her upper back, drawn in bold, even outlines with solid black fill in places. The composition is set against blurred sea and sand, with warm sunlight on the skin.

The ferry from Scarrow leaves at seven whether or not the tide wants it to, and you learn this the hard way on your first morning. Tamsin Rowe sells the tickets from a hut painted the colour of wet slate, and she will tell you that the crossing has cost her forty-one winters and she would not give back a single one.

Her nephew Ivo carves on the quay between sailings. He cuts the same shape into driftwood again and again: two loops knotted through a heart, the line thick and even, the centre left dark where the grain has soaked up the oil. Ask him why, and he says a woman from the mainland drew it on the back of a bill of lading in March, paid for her crossing in coppers, and never came back for her change. He has been trying to get the knot right ever since.

The fog arrives in October thick enough to swallow the lighthouse. You are standing by the rail when a figure in a grey coat steps off the gangway with a folded paper in one hand. She stops at Ivo's bench, studies the carving for a long time, then sets a thumbnail to the wood and lifts one loop a fraction higher. "There," she says. "You had it closed at the wrong end."

Ivo does not answer. He sands the place she touched until the line runs clean, wraps the carving in newspaper and presses it into her palm with the eleven pence he has been saving in a twist of cloth. The horn sounds. Tamsin, already shuffling for the ticket roll, says nothing at all, and the tide goes out under the hull as if it had only been waiting for permission.
