Paisley and flowers on a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
A large paisley shape filled with orange, pink and yellow sits on the top of the foot, with dotted and swirled detail along its edges. Purple, blue and red flowers and green leaves rise from the paisley toward the ankle, with a sprig of purple blooms at the top. The bold colour is outlined in dark ink and the photo is taken straight on against a pale background.

Dad had the tin of vermilion open before the lock keeper finished his tea, and he was already tutting at the cabin door, the one with the cracked panel he'd meant to replace since Easter. "Hold the brush steady, Nell," he said, which was rich, because his own hand shook after the second pint at the Stoke Lock pub.

We were doing a teardrop of paisley, the old kind Mum's shawl had, curled over at the tip like a comma that had changed its mind. Dad drew the outline in black with a brush as thin as a hair, dotting round the edge while the coal barges went by low and slow. Inside it I filled orange, then pink where the shape swelled, then a yellow sliver at the bottom that looked like a sunrise trapped in a bulb.
Above it went the flowers: red ones for the geraniums in the tubs on the towpath, blue ones with dark eyes for the cornflowers Mum had picked the summer she left, and a spray of purple at the top that Dad swore was lavender and I swore was not. He wouldn't let me do the leaves. He said leaves were where a painter showed off, and I was not to show off on his boat.
When the varnish was dry we stood back on the towpath. There was a little swirl inside the paisley he hadn't planned, a curl like a question. I asked him what it was for. He said it was for whoever steered the boat next, so they'd know someone had been careful with it. Then he went below to make the tea, and I stayed out until the light slid off the water and the colours held on the cabin side.
