Teapots and rose on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo on the outer thigh shows two ornate teapots with gold trim, jewelled details and floral patterns, set against a pink cloud and a purple backdrop. A red rose with green leaves sits at the lower right, and a scalloped teal lace border frames the whole composition. The bold outlines and saturated teal, pink, red and gold ink give it a rich, colourful finish.

Dear Tom,

Don't ask me why I'm posting the two blue teapots, the ones with the gilt spouts that Mum kept behind the glass doors and never let us touch. The big lid has gone loose and rattles every time the van takes the corner by Herne Bay, so wrap them in tea towels, not the Gazette. The print comes off on the glaze and I'm not having you fret about ink on the handles.

I've had the shop open six weeks now, above Ansell's the pawnbroker, and the lace doilies are the only thing selling well. Mr Ansell comes up at four for a cup of Assam and tells me the pink sky over the front window is worth more than the rest of the stock. He says the rose teapot is the one people ask about, the one with the stone in its lid like a bead of cough sweet. I told him the stone was glass and he laughed as if I'd made a joke.

The stone wasn't glass, Tom. When I unscrewed the finial to clean it, I found a folded square of paper packed down in the spout, in Mum's hand. It said only: keep the set together, the cloud stays with the pot. I have no idea what she meant, but I've put the kettle on twice this morning just to look at the blue.

So take the box to the post office on Monday and come up on Sunday. I'll pour you a cup from the one with the rose on the lid, and you can tell me which of us is supposed to keep the cloud.
