Palm tree and sunset on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A palm tree with a curved trunk and fronds sits above a half-hidden sun and horizontal wave lines, with three small birds in the sky. The design uses black linework with fine hatching in the sun's rays and light shading on the fronds. It is shown in black ink only, centred on the forearm against a light, textured towel.

The snow came over the top of the moor on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the road to Hartsfell had vanished, so the Crossed Keys had seven guests it had not planned for and a lorry driver asleep in the snug. I had kept the inn eleven winters and knew the rules of a closed road: feed the fires, watch the flour, and expect somebody to start talking about the sea.

That somebody was Mrs Ferriby, who had booked one night in October and was still with us. She carried a tin of postcards in her handbag, and on Friday evening she laid them across the table by the window one at a time. Each showed the same thing: a single palm bent over a sun that sat on the water like a coin dropped into a pond. "Madeira, 1961," she said. "My husband bought that one. He said the palm looked as if it was listening to the waves." She touched the corner where the printer had inked three gulls. "I never went back. I only liked being able to say I might."
On Saturday the wind dropped and the window frosted over from the inside, the way it does when the kitchen has been baking all day. I found her there before dawn, one finger on the glass, having drawn a tall tree with its fronds lifted, a low sun half sunk behind the trunk, and three small birds scratched in above it. The lines were shaky but patient, and she had left the rays until last.
The plough came up the valley at ten. I did not wipe the window. The guests ate their breakfast with their backs to the sun, and when the thaw came a week later the palm ran down the glass in thin silver streams, and I still do not know whether I was sorry to see it go.
