Palm trees along a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows five palm trees of varying heights, with fronds drawn in soft shaded strokes and trunks rendered as solid dark lines. A dark horizontal band of shaded vegetation runs along the base, creating a horizon. The work is entirely in black and grey, with light skin tones left open around the trees and a glossy dark background behind the arm.

The palms came into Gullhaven on the same boat that took away the last of the herring, and the harbourmaster said it was a poor trade. Five saplings in clay tubs, wrapped in sacking, that nobody on the quay had ever seen the like of. Tobiah Fenn carried them up the gangway himself and set them on the harbour wall where the salt wind could get at them, and he told the net-menders that a palm would grow in any place where a man was willing to wait for it.

Nobody waited for him. He sailed again before the first frond opened, and it was Ada Kell, the net-mender's girl, who carried water to the tubs each morning in a cracked bucket. She talked to them the way her grandmother talked to hens. The north wind took one in the first winter and another in the second, and by the third Ada had learned to lash the rest to iron stakes with twine unpicked from the broken nets, one knot for each season, because a knot was the only thing the wind respected.
The gale came in the spring of her eighteenth year. Ada sat up in the boathouse listening to the slates lift and thought of the palms bent double against the sea wall. In the morning the harbour was grey and full of wrack, and the three that remained stood tall and black against the water, fronds torn but upright. Fishermen rowing in from the banks saw them first and steered by them, as they had never steered by anything but the church.
Tobiah came back a decade later with a wife who had never seen snow, and he asked after the palms before he asked after his mother. Ada showed him the knots. He counted them slowly, the way sailors count, and then he laughed until he had to sit down on the wall.
