Palm tree sunset and flower on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a palm tree leaning over a red and orange sunset above a dark island and calm blue water. A red flower with green leaves sits below the scene, and small blue clouds appear at the top right. Bold black outlines and solid colour fills give it a flat, saturated finish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The island came up out of the haze on the third morning, low and dark with a single palm leaning over the water as if it had been waiting for someone to notice. Cal Pardoe didn't believe it until he put his palm flat on the rail and felt the salt still wet on the wood. Behind him the crew were already shouting over the hatch cover, arguing about whether the sun was rising or setting, because the sky had gone the colour of a struck match in every direction at once.

They dropped anchor in the lee of the reef before noon. The water was so clear that Cal could see the chain running down into blue and then into nothing. The mate, Ruth Tennant, said nobody had charted anything like it between here and the Cape, and the cook said the island had hung on a shop wall in Cardiff for forty years, pinned above the tills, so it was hardly a discovery. Cal said nothing. He was thinking of the painted cloth his mother kept folded in the drawer under the Sunday cups, the one with the red flower stitched at the bottom and the little blue clouds in the corner, which he had been told never to unfold because it was the only thing left from her father's ship.

He went ashore alone in the gig and walked up the beach to the palm. The flower was there, a wide red bloom at the root of the tree, and he picked one and tucked it behind his ear, which his mother would have scolded him for. At the top of the sand he turned round. The sun had dropped behind the dark hill and the whole bay was lit orange and red, exactly as the cloth showed it, every line of it sharp and black.

He took the cloth out of his pocket. It was folded so often the creases had gone white, and he did not need to open it to know the island was the same. He dropped the flower into the shallows and watched the tide carry it back out past the reef, red on blue, until he could not tell it apart from the sunset.
