Traditional swallow with red flowers

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A black and grey swallow in flight is the central subject, with red five-petalled flowers with yellow centres and green leaves arranged around it. The bold black outlines and flat fills with small shading details are typical of traditional tattooing, and the yellow and red add colour to the pale skin. The design fills the frame diagonally, with the swallow's wings sweeping up toward the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows came back to the big top the same week the last elephant was sold to a farm in Wales, which my mother said was either a sign or bad weather. Nobody in the Harrow & Vane Travelling Show believed in signs by then. We had nine acts, a generator that coughed whenever the wind shifted, and a ringmaster who kept his wages in a biscuit tin under the ticket booth.

I was the flyer. Tall, thin, unafraid in the way only the young are. Each evening I climbed the rope ladder to the platform and watched the birds dart through the gap under the canvas, black wings scissoring, while the poster below showed red flowers my father had painted himself with a tin of enamel and too much optimism. The swallows never looked at the crowd. They looked at the gap, and they went through it as if they owned it.

In October the rain got into the rigging and the crowds dropped to forty, then twenty. Dad sat in the sawdust with his back against a centre pole and told me the swallows knew something, that they flew south before the cold so they wouldn't have to watch the thing die. I told him swallows don't know anything. They just come back. That was the trouble with them, I said. They kept arriving for places that had stopped waiting.

On the last night a swallow dropped from the rafters and landed on my wrist while I was chalking my hands. I held still. It looked at me with one black eye, then lifted off and went straight through the open flap into the dark, toward the lights of the road. Dad said nothing. He took down the poster, folded it into quarters, and we both watched the painted flowers vanish into his coat.
